Firstly, I will start by listing the ingredients for crispy Nigerian Fried yam.

Ingredients for Crispy Nigerian Fried Yam Chips

  • Yam (2kg)
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp turmeric powder (optional)
  • 4 cups cooking oil

I love to use puna yam for this because it naturally sweet.

You can also use other types of yam apart from water yam.

Turmeric powder is a spice used to add an attractive yellow colour to food.

For this recipe, turmeric powder is used to achieve a nice yellow colour instead of artificial food colouring.

So, come along as I show you how to use to the above ingredients to make fried yam.

How To Make Fried Yam Crispy – Street style

Here is a detailed explanation of the steps to follow in order to make delicious fried yam.

  • Cut the yam into appropriate sizes that your hand can handle
  • Get a tray of a basket
  • Peel the brown skin off the yam into the tray or basket- watch how to peel yam here.
  • Dispose the yam skin
  • Cut the yam edible yam into your preferred sizes.
  • After peeling the yam, it is time to properly clean the yam slices.
  • Fill a big bowl with water
  • Pour all the yam slices into the water and gently clean with hands.
  • Scoop them out into another clean bowl
  • Dispose the water used and repeat the process the second time.
  • Transfer the clean yam slices into another bowl
  • Add 1 tbsp salt and enough water to cover the yams
  • Pour 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • Mix well to make sure turmeric dissolves well
  • Set aside for 15 – 20 minutes
  • After 20 minutes, scoop the yam from the turmeric water into a basket to drain excess water
  • Now it is time for deep frying
  • Place a frying pan suitable for deep frying in the cooker
  • Set the cooker the high heat
  • Pour enough oil into the pan and wait for 2-3 minutes or more till it is hot – I would be generous with the quantity of cooking oil because the yams will be deep fried.
  • Put on yam slice into the oil to test its hotness. – If it starts frying immediately, then the oil is hot enough.
  • Scoop a sizable quantity of yam into the cooking oil – try not to put too much so that the pan will not be over-crowded.
  • Fry the first side for 5 minutes
  • Then turn the yams so that the other side and fry for 2 minutes.
  • It is common to see some of the yams skin a little swollen while frying.
  • After frying for a total of 7 minutes, remove from the hot oil and transfer into a basket to drain excess oil.
  • Repeat this process until all the yam is fried.

Fried yam is ready to be enjoyed.

It can be eaten hot or cold. You can also eat it alone or or with delicious pepper sauce.
