
Light soup cooked with fish is one of the popular soups enjoyed by Nigerians. This is because, it is very easy to prepare and it combines well with a lot of other Nigerian food.
As this blog post continues, I will share with you the popular combinations for Nigerian light soup.
In Yoruba language, this soup is called “omi obe” and it can be prepared with any protein of choice.
Some of the popular proteins used are; beef, chicken, turkey, assorted meat, goat meat, fish and many more.
In addition, there are two major types of light soup namely; Ghana light soup and Nigerian light soup.
In this recipe, I share with you how to make light soup with fish the Nigerian way.
Firstly, I would proceed to list the ingredients needed to prepare this fish soup also known as light soup.
Ingredients for light soup
- 4 tomatoes
- 2 hake fish
- 2 bell peppers
- 1 onion(large)
- 2 scotch bonnet pepper (extra hot)
- 1 red long pepper
- 1/2 cup palm oil
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 stock cubes
Furthermore, some of the reasons why this soup is popular is because; it is easy to cook and it is budget friendly.
Omi obe is a budget-friendly Nigerian soup because the ingredients are easy to find and it does not require a lot of ingredients like other Nigerian soups.
How to cook Nigerian light soup.
Here is how to prepare Nigerian fish soup also known as light soup or omi obe.
- Clean the tomatoes, bell peppers, scotch bonnet peppers and red long pepper
- Peel the onion
- Blend all the tomatoes. peppers and onions to a smooth consistency, then set aside.
- Cut the hake fish into 4 to 5 pieces or more depending on the size of the fish.
- Remove the fins, gills, and fish insides.
- Use a small knife to remove the fish scale.
- After the first cleaning, cleaning again the second time.

- Place a pot on the cooker
- Pour palm oil into the oil and allow the oil heat up briefly
- Gently pour the blended tomato mix into the hot oil
- Put the clean fish
- Add salt and stock cubes
- Mix well and cook for 15-20 minutes on high heat
- After 20 minutes, Nigerian light soup is ready to be enjoyed.
