In this blog post, I share with you how to make fried fish with hake fish.

Firstly, I will briefly write about fried fish in Nigerian cuisine.

Fried fish is a staple food and ingredient in the Nigerian cuisine.

The simple method of preparation makes it a popular choice of protein for many people.

Also, the cost of making fried fish has made it a popular ingredient for cooking soups and a wide variety of Nigerian foods.

In addition, different types of fishes – such as hake, mackerel, horse mackerel, croaker fish, tilapia fish and many more- can be used to make fried fish the Nigerian way.

Fried fish can be made with flour and many other ingredients but, listed below are the ingredients needed to make a simple Nigerian fried fish.

  • Hake fish
  • 1 tbsp salt to taste
  • 2-3 cups cooking oil

Hake fish is a very delicious fish but it must be properly cleaned before it can be fried and enjoyed.

In this recipe, I will share with you details containing the step by step way to properly clean hake fish before cooking or frying.

How to clean hake fish

  • Depending on the size of the fish, cut the fish into 4 or more pieces.
  • Put the fish in the kitchen sink filled with water
  • Allow the fish defrost completely – it is essential that the fish be allowed to completely be defrosted to make cleaning easy.
  • Check that the fish is properly defrosted and soft
  • Remove the fins, gills and fish intestines
  • Use a knife to scrap the scales on both sides of the fish
  • Put descaled fish into a separate bowl to make it easy to identify the remaining fish that needs cleaning.
  • After cleaning, drain the water from the sink
  • Scoop out the fish scale and dispose in the bin.
  • Fill the sink with water again
  • Repeat the cleaning steps above to remove scales that may have been omitted during the first cleaning.

After the fish has been properly cleaned, then it will be fried.

How to make fried fish with hake fish

This is how to make delicious fried hake fish.

  • Put the clean fish in a basket
  • Add 1/2 tablespoon salt to the fish – the quantity of salt to be used is dependent on the quantity of the fish
  • Toss the fish up and down in the basket to properly coat the fish
  • Set aside for 5 minutes
  • Pour cooking oil into a shallow frying pan
  • Allow the oil to be moderately hot
  • Gently put the fish into the hot oil
  • Fry till it is turns golden brown
  • Turn to fry the other side of the fish till it is golden brown.
  • Scoop the fried fish out of the hot oil

Fried fish is ready to enjoyed or added to soup for cooking.
