
We are going to be learning how to make perfect obe olu.
Obe olu in English is mushroom soup or mushrooms stew.
Generally, mushroom in Yoruba is called “Olu” and soup is called “obe”. Hence the name Obe olu.
Additionally, there are different types of mushrooms such as; takele, Osun and Ewe. All of which can be used for this recipe.
It is important to state that, some mushrooms are not edible and non-edible mushrooms are called okunku.
Mushrooms in Igbo is “ero” which is pronounced as “eh-roh”.
In this blog post, obe olu, mushroom soup and mushroom sauce/stew will be used interchangeably.
So without wasting your time, let’s get straight to the ingredients needed.
Mushroom soup ingredients.
- 400g mushrooms.
- 2 tomatoes.
- 1/2 Scotch bonnet peppers.
- 2 onions.
- 1 bell pepper (red).
- Spring onions.
- 1/2 tbsp curry powder.
- 1/2 tbsp dry thyme.
- 1 tsp salt.
- 1 stock cube.
- 1 sweet pointy pepper (red).
- 2 canned sardines.
- 1/3 cup cooking oil.
As listed above, we would be needing mushrooms for this recipe and closed cup mushrooms were used.

Remember as earlier stated, you can use any mushroom of choice.
Also, please note that sardines in oil is the type of sardines used and this is the reason why the oil used was reduced.
However, sardines in tomato sauce is also a great choice for this recipe. Although optional, the cooking oil quantity can be slightly increased from 1/3 cup to 1/4 cup.
Now, let’s proceed with the simple preparation and cooking process of using ingredients listed above make to delicious stew.
How to prepare perfect mushrooms soup (Obe Olu).
- Clean the mushrooms thoroughly with water.
- Remove the bottom then slice the mushrooms to a not too thin or not too thick slice. – example can be seen in the video below.
- Set aside.
- Clean tomatoes, peppers and onions.
- Blend to a rough texture.
- Slice 1 white onion and a handful of spring onions separately to be used later.
- Heat up cooking oil.
- Fry the sliced onions in the hot oil for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the pepper mix.
- Season with Curry, Thyme, salt and seasoning.
- Mix well, allow to fry for 10 – 15 mins or till it dries.
- Open the can of Sardines and pour the content into the sauce.
- Add the sliced mushrooms too.
- Mix well and allow to cook for 6-8mins with the pot open.
- Then mix well again, add spring onions and cook finally for 2-3minutes.
- Mushroom stew is ready to be enjoyed.
Obe olu is ready.

Here are some of the delicious way and foods that can be eaten with this soup.
- Steamed plantains.
- Roasted yam.
- Boiled rice.
- Mushrooms on toast.
- Boiled or fried potato.
- Mushroom sauce with any pasta of choice.
- Fried yam.
