Locals call it different names depending on the area. Some of the other names of tiger nuts are “aya”, “ofio” while people from other cultures around the world call it atadwe, Zulu nut, yellow grass nut and many more.
Home made tiger nut drink is very easy to make, all you need to do is to trust the process explained in this recipe.
In this recipe, I will be sharing the ingredients for tiger nut drink and how to make tiger nut milk.

Ingredients For Tiger Nut Drink
- 1.5kg dried tiger nuts
- 500g dried dates
- 200g Ginger
- 2 1/2 litres water
How To Make Nigerian Tiger nut Drink
- Clean dried tiger nuts well till the water is clear
- Wash dried dates well in clean water as well
- Soak them separately in water for 6 to 12 hours to soften
- After 6 to 12 hours remove the water used to soften the tiger nuts and dates separately
- Remove all the seeds in the dates
- Clean and peel off the ginger skin
- Now mix all the ingredients together in a big bowl
- Blend with ingredients in batches with water
- Repeat the process until everything is blended
- Pour into a separate bowl to be processed later
- Sieve the blended ingredients to separate the juice from the chaff
- Blend all the chaff with some of the separated juice
- Strain again to extract the juice.
- Dispose the chaff.
- Mix all the tiger nut drink together.
- Refrigerate and serve cold.

How To Make Tiger nut Drink last long.
Just like all fresh drinks that don’t contain preservatives, it is important to know how to store it properly to avoid wastage.
The easy way to to store this drink is to keep it refrigerated or frozen.
Listed below is all you need to do.
- Keep the drink in the fridge as you do the below listed
- Clean and sterilise empty bottles and their lids with warm water.
- Place the bottles upside down to drain the water used for cleaning
- Allow them all dry.
- Neatly fill the bottles with the drink
- Freeze some of the botte so that they last longer
- Store the rest in the fridge.
