Yoruba people call it ‘dundun oniyeri’. This name is a result of the uniqueness of this snack.

Here is a breakdown, in Yoruba language, fried yam is called ‘dundun’ while ‘oniyeri’ is a descriptive word for a covering like a cloth.

In other words, dundun oniyeri means coated fried yam.

This popular snack is a unique combination of yam and beans. People who lived in lagos in the 90’s and early 2000’s are familiar with this street food.

It is a street food because it is commonly sold by street vendors in the evenings alongside other snacks such as buns, fried yam, puff puff, fried potato and many more.

Without wasting too much time, all the ingredients needed to prepare this delicious snack will be listed below.

Ingredients for Yam Burger.

  • Yam
  • Beans flour
  • Cooking oil
  • Salt
  • Water

Beans flour can be replaced with beans paste i.e. the type of fresh beans paste used for making akara.

Now let’s proceed to the step-by-step procedure on how to make use of the ingredients appropriately.

How to make coated yam.

  • Mix beans flour with lukewarm water till it is semi-thick.
  • Set aside and allow to rest.
  • Get a big bowl of water
  • Cut yam into slices
  • Peel the brown skin off the yam to reveal the white part.
  • As soon as the yam’s skin is peeled, put the white yam in water immediately.
  • Do this till all the yam slices have been peeled.
  • Clean the white yam in water
  • Then cut it into smaller and thinner sizes
  • Pour cooking oil into a frying pan
  • Place the pan on the cooker and heat up the oil.
  • While the oil is getting hot, scoop a small portion of beans paste into a bowl
  • Add salt to taste
  • Mix well to combine
  • Coat the yam slice with the beans paste by dipping it into the beans paste.
  • Then put the coated yam in the hot oil for frying.
  • Do this till enough coated yam slices have been put in the hot oil.
  • Allow to fry on medium heat till it has a golden brown colour
  • Turn it to the other side as well to ensure that both sides are well fried.
  • Scoop out into a basket to drain off excess oil.
  • When the beans paste runs out, add salt to more beans paste and mix well.
  • Repeat the process till all the yam slices have been coated and fried.

Sumptuous yam burger is ready to be enjoyed.

Typically yam burger is sold with a simple fried pepper stew which makes it a hearty meal. It can also be enjoyed on its own.
